Sustainability has become an important agenda in higher education institutions. Given sustainability was not well integrated into mainstream university operations and curricula, the need to incorporate sustainability into university's courses and programmes are immense. Online and distance education has been acknowledged as a mechanism in which sustainable development can be achieved while serving as the platform through which the enculturation of lifelong learning can be realised upon.
Therefore, the objectives of the study are to identify the attributes of online and distance education which can be associated with sustainable development goals, to elucidate the relationship between sustainability and online and distance education programme and to propose a composite sustainability index in measuring the sustainability of the online and distance education programme.
This study employs a mixed-method research design comprising qualitative and quantitative techniques throughout the composite index development process.
As the outcome, a tool comprising sustainability criteria/indicators that measure the sustainability of an online and distance education programme in universities will be delivered. The study provides decision-makers an instrument to assess the sustainability of an online and distance education programme in universities and produces a benchmark of sustainability attainment for online and distance education programmes.
